Job Description

Bellbird Baked Goods is looking for an experienced Chef de Partie to take responsibility for a section of our café and cabinet-food production.

  • Permanent full-time
  • 40 guaranteed hours per week
  • Tuesday–Saturday, morning shifts including 5am starts
  • $28.00 per hour
  • Christchurch – Woolston and Merivale

This role will involve working at both our Tannery (Woolston) and Holmwood (Merivale) locations so will suit someone who enjoys variety in where they work, with an immediate start available. If you are someone who is driven by high standards in all that you do, this could be the role for you.

Tasks & Responsibilities

Often working independently, you will organise and produce a daily range of savoury and sweet food that complements Bellbird’s bread and pastry range. This includes fresh sandwiches, savouries, baked cabinet items, seasonal products and other ready-to-eat food.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and organise the daily preparation and production requirements for your section.
  • Prepare and cook savoury and sweet café and cabinet food.
  • Produce sandwiches, savouries, baked items and seasonal products using Bellbird’s breads and other bakery products.
  • Follow and interpret recipes and production specifications to achieve consistent results.
  • Monitor the quality, presentation and consistency of products throughout preparation and production.
  • Identify production or quality issues and work with the Department Lead to resolve them.
  • Ensure production is completed within agreed deadlines.
  • Coordinate preparation and handover requirements with other members of the kitchen and bakery teams.
  • Manage stock levels, FIFO rotation and daily ingredient requirements.
  • Assist with ordering and ensure adequate stock is available for future production.
  • Monitor wastage and contribute to controlling ingredient and labour costs.
  • Maintain production records, handover notes and other required documentation.
  • Maintain and enforce high standards of food safety, hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Demonstrate food-preparation and production methods and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
  • Contribute ideas for improving recipes, workflow, production efficiency and product quality.
  • Ensure finished products meet Bellbird’s standards before they are offered for sale.
  • Assist with customer service and product knowledge when required.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must have:

  • At least 3 years’ relevant commercial experience in a café, bakery, restaurant or comparable food-production kitchen.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and cooking both savoury and baked café food.
  • Experience independently organising and completing a daily kitchen production workload.
  • Experience working from recipes and maintaining consistent quality and presentation.
  • Experience with stock rotation, kitchen supplies and waste control.
  • Sound understanding of commercial food-safety and hygiene practices.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet production deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a production team.
  • Ability to guide or demonstrate kitchen procedures to other team members.
  • A relevant cookery, baking or hospitality qualification is desirable but is not essential where the required relevant experience can be demonstrated.
